RealProducer 11: Capture VCR Video |

These instructions apply to encoding streaming media files on the Video Production stations located in the Instructional Development Centers.
Print the following basic steps to capture video from a VCR to a RealMedia
(.rm) file:

To capture video
- Locate the S-Video out port on the back of the VCR and connect the
S-Video cable.
- Locate the S-Video port on the back of the computer on the capture
card breakout cable and connect the S-Video cable.

To capture audio
- Locate the audio out ports (red and white) on the back
of the VCR and connect the RCA cable (red and white).
- Locate the audio ports (red and white) on the back of the computer
on the capture card breakout cable and connect the RCA cable
(red and white).

Turn on the VCR playback mode. Start and then pause the video.

Double click the RealProducer 11 Plus icon on the desktop.

From the dropdown menu under File, choose Open
Job....

Browse to the s-videoBroadband template ( s-videoBroadband.rpjf) file
on the D drive, select the file, and then click on the Open button.
Save your RealProducer job. From the drop-down menu under File, choose SaveJob As... Browse
to the D drive, input a new file name in the File name: textbox
and then click the Save button.

In the Job Manager work space (bottom-horizontal pane), s-video Broadband Template displays
with Not Ready. The Encode and Stop buttons
are “grayed out” or “disabled.”

Under the Destination Workspace, click on the Add
File Destination button and
browse to the D drive. In the File Name: textbox,
input the name of your file, choose rm from the
drop-down menu under Save type as: and
click on the Save
Button.
The file name will display within the Destination Workspace.

Under Status in both the Destination Workspace and Job Manager Workspace , Ready will display. The Encode Button will be enabled .

To begin the capture process, click the Encode Button and play the
video.
Under Destination Workspace Status, Writing... will
display. Encoding and a Start time
will display in the Job Manager Workspace. While you
are encoding, the source will display on the left in the Input
Window and the captured video will display on the right
in the Output Window. The Audio Meter will
display a dynamic green bar which indicates the loudness of
the audio.

To end the encoding process, click the Stop Button on
the bottom-right and then stop playing the video in the VCR.

Click on the Clip Information button on the right-side
of your screen under Output. Input a title, author,
and copyright information. You may input keywords, a description,
and choose a rating setting. To close the Clip Information window, click the Red X on the top-right.

Usually you will want to encode both a broadband and a modem version of your videoclip.
If not, skip to step 15.

To encode a modem version, rewind the VCR VHS tape. From the
dropdown menu under File, select Open Job... and
choose the rcaModem.rpjf template.
Save your RealProducer job. From the drop-down menu under File, choose SaveJob As... Browse
to the D drive, input a new file name in the File
name: textbox and then click the Save button.
Repeat steps 10 - 12.

To view your streaming videoclip(s), double-click on My Computer on your desktop . Browse to your streaming videoclip on the D drive and then double click on your file. The videoclip will play in Real Player.

Video Request Form.
