Helix RealProducer 11: Capture DVD Video

These instructions apply to encoding streaming media files on the Video Production stations located in the Instructional Development Centers.

Print the following basic steps to capture video from a DVD player to a RealMedia (.rm) file:

  1. Locate the composite RCA out ports on the DVD player and connect the RCA cable (yellow, red and white).

  2. Locate the composite RCA ports on the back of the computer on the capture card breakout cable and connect the other end of the RCA cable.

  3. Turn on the DVD player. Play and then pause the video.

  4. Double click the RealProducer 11 Plus icon on the desktop.

  5. From the dropdown menu under File, choose Open Job...

  6. Browse to the rcaBroadband template (rcaBroadband.rpjf) file on the D drive, select the file, and then click on the Open button. Save your RealProducer job. From the drop-down menu under File, choose SaveJob As... Browse to the D drive, input a new file name in the File name: textbox and then click the Save button.

  7. In the Job Manager work space (bottom-horizontal pane) , rcaBroadband Template displays with Not Ready. The Encode and Stop buttons are “grayed out” or “disabled.” 

  8. Under the Destination Workspace, click on the Add File Destination button destination and browse to the D drive. In the File Name: textbox, input the name of your file, choose rm from the drop-down menu under Save type as: and click on the Save Button. The file name will display within the Destination Workspace.

  9. Under Status in both the Destination Workspace and Job Manager Workspace, Ready will display. The Encode Button will be enabled .

  10. To begin the capture process, click the Encode Button and play the video. Under Destination Workspace Status, Writing... will display. Encoding and a Start time will display in the Job Manager Workspace. While you are encoding, the source will display on the left in the Input Window and the captured video will display on the right in the Output Window. The Audio Meter will display a dynamic green bar which indicates the loudness of the audio.

  11. To end the encoding process, click the Stop Button on the bottom-right and then stop playing the video in the DVD.

  12. Click on the Clip Information button on the right-side of your screen under Output. Input a title, author, and copyright information. You may input keywords, a description, and choose a rating setting. To close the Clip Information window, click the Red X on the top-right.

  13. Usually you will want to encode both a broadband and a modem version of your videoclip.
    If not, skip to step 15.

  14. To encode a modem version, select Open Job from the dropdown menu under File and choose the dvdModem.rpjf template. Save your RealProducer job. From the drop-down menu under File, choose SaveJob As... Browse to the D drive, input a new file name in the File name: textbox and then click the Save button. Repeat steps 10 - 12.

  15. To view your streaming videoclip(s), double-click on My Computer on your desktop . Browse to your streaming videoclip on the D drive and then double click on your file. The videoclip will play in Real Player.

  16. The next steps are to upload your streaming videoclip to the streaming server (How do I upload my streaming files to the streaming server.) and complete the Streaming Video Request Form.
