Choosing a Media Player

ACC supports video resources in Flash Media format. ACC maintains older content in Real Media, Windows Media, and Quicktime streaming media formats. You can download the appropriate media player you require from this web page.  Be sure to review the system requirements for the media player you are downloading.

Note: Not all ACC web sites and courses use the same streaming media format, so be sure to install the appropriate media player. Below are links which will explain these formats:

Adobe Flash Video

The Adobe Flash Player is a multimedia and application player developed and distributed by Adobe Systems . It plays SWF files, created by the Adobe Flash authoring tool, Adobe Flex , or a number of other Adobe Systems and third party tools. Most current browsers include the Flash player in its resources. You should only need to download this if you are having problems viewing Flash video files.

Real Alternative

Real Alternative is a codec created for playing RealMedia files on Microsoft Windows operating systems without installing RealPlayer . The pack can be used with any DirectShow-enabled media player, such as Media Player Classic , which is included as part of the package. The application was designed by KL Software using Real Media Splitter, an open source video filter, and Real Media Codecs.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

RealPlayer
(briefly known also as RealOne Player) is a cross-platform media player by RealNetworks that plays a number of multimedia formats including MP3 , MPEG-4 , QuickTime , Windows Media and multiple versions of proprietary RealAudio and RealVideo formats. Currently, the Real Player v.11 which is downloaded from the Real Media site, is NOT compatible with our older files. You should download Real Alternative (see above).

Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player (WMP) is a digital media player and media library application developed by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and viewing images on personal computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system , as well as on Pocket PC and Windows Mobile -based devices. The Windows Media Player 11 currently used in ACC Libraries and Media Centers is designed to work with all editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Apple Quicktime Player

QuickTime is a multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc., capable of handling various formats of digital video, media clips, sound, text, animation, music, and several types of interactive panoramic images (using Quicktime VR). It is available for Mac OS X, the older Classic Mac OS , and Microsoft Windows operating systems and provides support for software packages including iTunes , QuickTime Player (which can also serve as a helper application for web browsers to play media files that might otherwise fail to open) and the Safari browser.

Flip4Mac

Flip4Mac is a trademarked brand name for Telestream, Inc. 's proprietary digital media tools for the Macintosh. It is, so far, the only QuickTime component for Mac OS X that supports Windows Media Video, although there is non-QuickTime OS X software that supports WMV. You can download this software if you have a Macintosh system and need to view Windows Media Video format files.
