Server Resources
IRT Network Services (NetServ) supports many network servers and instructional applications. We maintain a high level of availability and are alerted 24 hours a day,365 days a week if one of our servers has a problem. One of our staff is available at all times to take care of emergency situations. We use the college-wide backup system to backup all of our critical servers nightly. In most cases we can restore data at a moment’s notice. We have a Microsoft IIS6 web server which supports as many as ten websites including IRT.austincc.edu, Library.austincc.edu and DL.austincc.edu. This server is capable of hosting websites written in almost any scripting language. The college has chosen to use Blackboard as the course management system. The ACC Blackboard server system consists of an application server and a database server. The system is monitored closely to ensure 24/7 uptime by IRT Network Services. Heavy use at the beginning and end of each semester makes this job even more important. For the fall of 2008 we will be installing a new system with a redundant front-end and more a robust SQL server with a duplicate ready to go online within the hour if something goes wrong. We have several network servers that host college-wide instructional software packages. We maintain one server which is capable of supporting several software packages. We also have separate application server/database systems to run Plato Interactive Math and Adobe Connect. We have two streaming media servers. We have had a Real Networks media server in place since the fall of 2001and most of the streaming media in the college is run from this server. We have recently implemented an Adobe Flash Media server which is ready for content at this time. Staff are in the process of converting our Real Media streams to Flash. NetServ is also responsible for maintaining the server which plays the college’s on-the-air content on cable channel 19. In addition to the servers listed above, we also support all the servers needed by IRT staff to do their daily tasks, share documents, backup local drives, and print. IRT Network Services maintains a Microsoft Active Directory domain to facilitate these services for our staff. Since we are part of Instructional Resources & Technology, we are only involved with the instructional network applications in the college. Information Technology can help you with email, phones, and network connections in the classrooms and offices. There is a lot of magic involved in our jobs as we keep all of the servers happy and functioning to the level that our department, and the college, has come to expect. |
