Innovation Grants

ACC has provided funds for awards to groups of faculty, individual faculty, and professional-technical staff for projects that focus on enhancing the learning environment. There are two criteria all proposals must meet in order to be considered for an Innovation Grant:

  1. The project must focus on enhancing the learning environment for students.
  2. The project must propose to do something new or in a new way.

Which Projects Are Eligible for Grants?

The table below illustrates the two types of Innovation Grant awards.

These awards will provide funding for course design, development, and delivery of materials or services to support the learning environment.

These projects will focus on the development of teaching and related strategies that incorporate technology, employ current research elements, and nurture intellectual discourse for the improvement of learning environments.

Designed for faculty or professional-technical staff working on a single course, component of a course, or special project.

Designed for departments, divisions, or entire instructional program support.

$2500 or less

Greater than $2,500 up to $15,000. Project awards will be based on the scope of the project and number of students served.

Examples
  1. Develop streaming video segments for demonstration of food preparation procedures to be used in "Sanitation and Safety" (IFWA-1213).
  2. Research and develop a list of short story audio files for Composition II classes.
  3. Improve student achievement by developing computer-based lab tutorials for SRGT 1441, Surgical Procedures I.
  1. Pilot a prototype computer facility to provide an enhanced foreign language learning environment and improve mastery.
  2. Adapt courses in the social and behavioral sciences division to incorporate the case study instructional approach.
  3. Research current trends in internationalizing the curriculum and modify courses in the business division to incorporate the research findings.

Who Can Apply?

Full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and professional-technical staff in support of instructional programs and student services of the college. Other college personnel can participate on grant development teams but are not eligible to submit applications.

Intellectual Property Statement:

Under the ACC Intellectual Property Policy, an award is college commissioned work. As such, the college has full ownership of any materials produced under the auspices of an award. For additional information review the ACC Copyright and Fair Use Website.

Grant Requirements:

Innovation Grants require the submission of three reports and completed samples of any materials funded by the awards. Reports should be submitted using the specified online forms.

Requirement Timeframe Description
Planning Report The planning report should be completed in consultation with an IDS staff member before the application is submitted. This document must include defined goals, measurable objectives, and specific task assignments for the project team member and other support staff.
Status Reports Status Reports must be submitted at the end of each semester. These reports provide updates of your progress on the grant project and help us to identify any special issues or problems that need to be addressed to complete work by the end of the academic year.
Evaluation Report The evaluation report must be submitted before spring break of the following calendar year. This report describes the overall results of the project and materials produced, if applicable. The report should include outcomes in the classroom, information on the dissemination of materials to other faculty, and recommendations for revision of the project products as necessary.
Materials Project materials must be submitted with the evaluation report. Samples of each product (i.e. handbooks, videotapes, websites, digital resources, etc.) must be submitted with the closeout report. For digital /electronic documents and materials, include URLs or materials on disk.

Deadlines for Submission:

You may begin applying for Innovation Grant funds on February 1st, for the following academic year. Reviewers will evaluate the applications and complete the Innovation Grants Review Form to determine if planning documents were submitted, letters of support were received, and whether the narrative meets the stated criteria or fails to meet the proposed guidelines. In some instances, time and financial constraints may prompt the reviewers to recommend that proposals be revised or resubmitted during the following round of applications or the next academic year.

Unique Project applications (totaling $2500 or less) will be reviewed by the Director of Instructional Development on an ongoing basis. Within 10 working days after application is received, applicants will receive an Innovation Grants Award Notice stating whether the project was approved or not approved, listing the reviewers' comments, and noting any recommendations.

Instructional Development Project applications (requesting more than $2500) will be reviewed by the Innovation Grant Committee in three rounds. On the Wednesday following the committee review, applicants will receive an Innovation Grants Award Notice stating whether the project was approved or not approved, listing the reviewers' comments, and noting any recommendations made by the Innovation Grants Review Committee.

The committee is composed of five reviewers including:

  • Full-time Faculty Member
  • Adjunct Faculty Member
  • Grants Office Staff Member
  • Profesional-Technical Staff Member
  • Director of Instructional Development

Proposal Steps:

The entire grant process can be divided into three major steps: planning, applying, and awards. During the planning and applying steps, you are required to fill out two forms: first, a planning report; second, an application (with a proposed budget).

Post-Proposal Activities:

If you receive notification that you grant is awarded, you will need to fill out three additional forms: funding requests, followed by semesterly status reports and finally an evaluation report.
