Class Syllabus Introduction |
Every instructor will develop a Class Syllabus for each course taught. As much latitude as possible, within the parameters set by the appropriate discipline, is given to instructors in developing the content of their syllabus. However, the college is asking faculty to ensure that syllabi include, at a minimum, the component areas. The components may be in the order desired by the instructor or, as prescribed by the Department in the Master Syllabus. Nevertheless, it is very important that all components be addressed.
In summary, the Class Syllabus must include clearly-defined :
- Master Syllabus components prescribed by the Department (Master Syllabi are developed by departments of the various disciplines and approved by the relevant Dean.)
- components of the Class Syllabus prescribed by the Department
- and additional customizable components of the Class Syllabus determined by the Instructor
A syllabus constitutes a contract between instructor and student. Make sure that it is clear and concise. Note that there is a standardized statement for OSD students and scholastic dishonesty. Faculty will be required to complete the Syllabus Review Checklist ("Checklist" button on the left links to Word Version of the checklist) and must submit two copies of their syllabi and the completed checklist to their Department Chair as part of the Faculty Evaluation Portfolio Process. After review, the form and one copy of the syllabi will be forwarded to the faculty member's Dean.
The buttons above will provide links to syllabus templates that allow you to create a simple Web/HTML version, Word document or PDF file.
If you have questions or need additional information contact your Department Chair or Dean. A listing can be found by selecting the "Contacts" button on the left.
