Update: Check out the Digital Stories created at Summer Institute.

Description:

Left brain meets right brain in this year's Summer Institute for faculty. Designed to help faculty develop multimedia skills, these series of workshops will use the framework of Digital Storytelling to create stories to connect with and engage the learner. Hands-on activities will take participants through the process of desktop media production. Participants will gain skills and knowledge of how to tell their stories with simple multimedia to motivate, inspire students and connect as a community of learners.

Whereas the use of technology skills may be very left -brained, the idea is to use the right brain to present information to learners in artful, creative and imaginative ways to encourage learners to synthesize information and think critically.

"Lively narrative format is being used increasingly in higher education, and it appears to be helping students think critically and understand factual content in a personalized fashion." excerpted from Storytelling as a Pedagogical tool in Higher Education by Abrahamson (1998)

This summer institute will prepare participants to create stories and apply New Media in face-to-face and online courses to help improve teaching and learning at Austin Community College.

Outcome:

At the end of this workshop, faculty will have created a short (3 min) multimedia story along with the help of Instructional Development Services staff. Additionally a design and script will be planned for a second 3 min production that can be used in class. (i.e. advance organizer)

Faculty will apply a production model to script and storyboard for a 3 min:

1) personal narrative to motivate or inspire student learning and
2) story to introduce a topic studied in class (Advanced Organizer)

Skills and knowledge will include how to:
  1. Tell a story: Write a script of 300- 400 words to tell a point of view (narrative)
  2. Capture and Edit Video : scan images; edit digital still images and video
  3. Capture Audio: record a voice over; add music

Audience:
