FAQs
Media and the Classroom
Can I view DVD's in my classroom?
Yes. All of our new computers on the multimedia carts have DVD players.
In addition, each campus has a DVD player on a multimedia cart that can
be checked out by faculty for use in the classroom.
Can I check out ITV tapes to show in class?
No. The license agreement with the producers of the ITV tapes prohibits
their use in the classroom. However, if it is a published series we can
purchase a set that can be checked our for classroom use. We've done
this with the Zimbardo, Discovering Psychology series and a couple of
other former distance learning titles.
Can I videotape myself or my students' presentation/s in class? Yes. We have both digital and VHS camcorders along with tripods available
for faculty to check out and use for recording their lectures or other
classroom activities. However, due to staffing limitations we can't
always supply a person to run the camera for you. So you may have to
ask one of your students to run the camera or set it up on the tripod
and let it run.
Media Equipment
Can I take media equipment home?
The answer here is mixed. It needs to be noted that all of the equipment
is to be used to support instruction and not for personal use. However,
some pieces of equipment (cameras, tape recorders, slide projectors,
overheads, and portable screens) can be checked out for off-campus teaching
use.
Can I load my own software on computer carts?
Yes. The multimedia carts can have instructor software loaded on them.
However, due to increased use, it may not always be possible for you
to get the same cart. Because of this we advise faculty to always bring
the loaded software with them just in case the desired cart is in use.
Also, we re-image the multimedia carts each semester or in the case
of a major virus contamination. In these cases faculty loaded software
will be deleted.
Can I check out a digital camera for the weekend?
Yes. If you are capturing images to support your classroom instruction, then a camera can be checked out over the weekend.
Media Center Procedures
Can I check out an entire series of videos for review?
During the semester, this is not a good idea. Having an entire series
out makes the series unavailable to other faculty members. We usually
recommend checking out only one or two titles at a time. However,
between semesters and during holiday breaks it might be permissible to
check out an entire series.
I don't have a faculty I.D. can I still check out equipment?
If it is your first time in the Media Center other forms of ID are
acceptable. As long as your faculty information is in the computer and
we can verify your identity then we can check out equipment and tapes
to you.
Can I keep the key overnight since I will be using the equipment everyday?
My class ends after you close; can I just keep the equipment overnight or lock it in my office?
In order to ensure security and provide equal access we ask that
faculty not keep equipment overnight. With exception of small equipment
checked out for off campus use, all equipment is expected to be
returned to the media center or to the storage closet after the class
is completed.
Can my students pick up this equipment for my class?
Students are not allowed to check out equipment; only faculty can.
The only way we can safely release equipment to students for faculty
is if the student presents the professors ACC ID and his/her own ACC
ID AND a photo ID. This should not be a regular practice. If special
accommodations are needed, they will be determined on a case by case
basis.
I won't be in class or will have a substitute; will media staff set up and start a video for me?
Media staff can pre-check out the video to you and give it to the
substitute. Or, if the substitute is an ACC professor we can check out
the video to them. Media staff cannot be responsible for initiating
classroom activities. If the substitute is not an ACC professor, we
can set up a multimedia cart for them and retrieve the cart when the
class is over.
I borrowed this tape from another campus. Can I return it here?
Faculty can reserve tapes that are housed at other ACC campuses an have
them shipped to their teaching campus via intercampus mail. This
process usually takes a couple of days so ample lead time is requested.
Faculty can return tapes and other material checked from another campus
at any other ACC campus.
Faculty Resource Centers (FRC)
Can you help me access my e-mail, e-staffing, workshops I've done, class rosters?
Media Staff can assist faculty access ACC's 'eServices' on the computers in the Faculty Resource Centers (FRC's).
Can I install some class-related software on a computer in the FRC?
With proof of licensure, faculty can install productivity software
on FRC machines. However these machines are regularly re-imaged and
thus the installed software could be erased by the next time you visit
the FRC.
Can I make transparencies in the FRC?
Faculty can make a limited number of transparencies in the FRC. However
they will be limited to black and white laser copies. If more copies
are required the faculty needs to request additional transparencies
through their departmental budget.
Can I make color copies off your color printer?
A limited number of color originals may be made on the color inkjet
printers in the Media Centers. Additional color copies need to be made
off-campus.
Can you help me learn/help me do a project in PowerPoint?
Media staff are available to assist faculty with PowerPoint as well as other Microsoft Office programs.
Do you have a CD-burner I can use?
There is at least one CD-Burner in each FRC available for faculty use.
I'm a Mac user are there Mac's available in the FRC?
Yes. There is at least on Mac available in each FRC. In addition,
NRG, RGC, and RVS have iBooks available for use in the FRC or in the
classroom.

Can you take this info and jazz it up and make me a flyer?

Can you laminate? How big or small?
