Preparing Computer-Based English Departmental Exams

Secure, computer-based English Departmental Exams are now available in the ACC Testing Centers.These tests are only delivered via Blackboard. Therefore, in order to make this option available to your students, you must have a Bb account.

A secure English departmental essay exam, complete with a departmental exam folder, exam title, essay composition area, and exam instructions, has been archived in zip file format and can be downloaded directly into your Blackboard course. The contents of this zip file will be added to whatever presently exists in your Blackboard account.

Below is a step by step process you can follow to add secure computer-based English Departmental exams to Blackboard:

  1. Print this web page or print a PDF version of these instructions.

  2. Download the following English Departmental Exam zip file and store it on your computer:

  3. Log in to your Blackboard English course

  4. Select Control Panel

  5. Select Import Packgage from the Course Options menu on the Control Panel (select the zip file you just downloaded)

  6. Click Browse and locate the file English Departmental exam's zip file on your computer

  7. Check the: (a) Content, (b) Grade Center Column and Settings and Tests, and (c) Surveys and Pools boxes (VERY IMPORTANT):

  8. Click Submit, and OK.

  9. Verify that the Course Content folder or menu button entitled either 1301 Dept Exam (for Comp I) or 1302 Dept Exam (for Comp II) was added to your course and click on the folder.

  10. Verify that the Departmental Exam and exam instructions have been added to your Course Content folder (the exam will be entitled Dept Exam-Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser)

  11. Click on the link for the exam and select OK.

  12. Authorized ACC Testing Centers are the only locations where students can access their computer-based departmental exams. If students attempt to access the exam from a non-secure browser, they will receive a Password is incorrect message

  13. Test the functionality of your exam by accessing it from a secure, Lockdown browser on an ACC Testing Center computer (click on the BB Test icon on the computer desktop)

  14. Students take and submit their exams.

Grading Essay Exams

To grade submitted essay exams, do the following:

  1. Log in to your Bb course.

  2. Click Control Panel and then choose Grade Center

  3. Locate the Dept. Exam column to the right of the student who you wish to retrieve the essay exam response (the green exclamation point indicates that a submitted exam needs grading )

  4. Display the Departmental Exam essay results by clicking on the (chevron) icon to the right of the icon.

  5. Select the Grade Details option from the pull down menu.

  6. Choose View Attempt from the Actions column to display the essay response. The essay is displayed on the screen and can be read online or printed. To print, chose File Menu>Print or click on the Printer icon at the top of the browser window.


  7. Click Submit to return to the grading page.
  8. Grade the essay. Add feedback in the space provided if appropriate.
  9. To enter a grade, next to the display Current Grade 0.0 click the Override button.
  10. Enter a grade and then click Save.
  11. At the bottom of the page, click OK to return to the Grade Center.
