Using Assignments in Blackboard

Another useful assessment tool is to assign a task for students to accomplish. These assignments may be inserted in any Course Area of the Blackboard site, not just the Assignments menu section.

Creating an Assignment

To insert and assignment, from the Control Panel > choose and Content Area and then choose Add: Assignment from the drop menu at far right.

As in other areas, the instructor enters the name of the assignment .

The instructions describe the assignment to be accomplished by the student and may include descriptions such as its length and possible content.

Click on "Submit" to finish editing the assignment.

This is the student view of the assignment.

The student creates their response using the appropriate software such as Microsoft Word, and then attaches their file with any comments to the teacher.

When a student submits an assignment it will appear in the Gradebook, where instructors can access and grade it. Teachers can see all assignments, but students see only their own.

A ! means the assignment has been submitted but has not been graded yet.

Best Practices

Students will need to be advised of the format they should use for assignment submission. For example, students may have a variety of word processing software. The teacher may have only Microsoft Word. The teacher will not be able to open an essay written with Word Perfect. One solution is to require students to use the same Word Processor as the teacher (i.e. submit only .doc , Microsoft Word Documents). Another option is to download various "readers" which allow teachers to open documents created in other programs.
